Bike accidents involving children

On Behalf of | Nov 6, 2023 | Bicycle/pedestrian Accidents |

Bicycles are a fun and popular mode of transportation for children. Riding a bike promotes physical activity and independence. However, families should understand the dangers involved, as bike accidents can lead to injuries.

Young cyclists as well as parents should explore common bike accident injuries and discuss ways to prevent them.

Common bike accident injuries

One of the most serious types of injuries in bike accidents is a head injury. Head injuries can range from minor bruises to severe concussions or even traumatic brain injuries. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that from 2009 to 2018, 44.6 out of every 100,000 children between 10 and 14 years old went to the emergency department due to TBIs sustained in bike accidents.

When children fall from their bikes or collide with objects, they may also experience fractures or broken bones. The most commonly affected areas are the wrists, arms and collarbones. Encouraging children to wear protective gear like elbow and knee pads can help reduce the severity of these injuries.

Preventing bike accident injuries

Wearing a properly fitted helmet is the most effective way to prevent head injuries. Young bicyclists must recognize the importance of wearing a helmet every time they ride their bikes, and ensure it fits snugly on their heads, covering their forehead. Children should also understand traffic rules and road signs, and the importance of obeying them. They should ride on designated bike paths or sidewalks whenever possible, and look both ways before crossing the road.

A child’s bike should have reflectors or lights to increase visibility, especially when riding during dusk or in low-light conditions. Wearing brightly colored clothing can also enhance visibility and reduce the risk of accidents. Adult supervision can help prevent accidents and ensure that children are following safety guidelines.

By recognizing risks and focusing on safety, parents and children can avoid the potentially devastating consequences of a bike accident.
