The dangers of trucker fatigue

On Behalf of | Mar 17, 2021 | Truck Accidents |

With the rise in online shopping over the past decade, it seems as if more truckers than ever are under the gun to get their cargo to their Florida destination on time. Even though there are federal rules that try to limit the duration of truck drivers’ shifts, it does not mean that truckers are always well-rested and alert when they are on the road.

Fatigue takes away a driver’s focus and reflexes

With the size of the trucks that they are operating, truckers need their wits about them at all times behind the wheel. Even a split-second delay in reacting can rob the driver of the valuable time that they need to avoid a motor vehicle accident. Trucking is dangerous enough with the large blind spots and the massive disparity in size between big rigs and passenger vehicles. Drivers need to be alert at all times and fully focused on the road so that they can make the quick decisions necessary to keep other drivers safe.

Fatigue does not just come from a long shift

Many truck drivers can be fatigued even if they are properly following the NHTSA mandatory rest rules. Sometimes, drivers need to take more than a handful of hours off to stay alert. They could not be feeling well that day or be struggling with medication. Even if they are following the rules, they may be driving in the middle of the night when their body is tired. A fatigued driver is most likely a negligent driver. They could make a mistake that causes an accident, and their employer could be legally responsible for the accident that they cause.

If you or a loved one has been injured in an accident, a personal injury attorney may help file your claim with the insurance company as you seek compensation. Truck accident injuries are often severe, and they may lead to significant compensation for those whose lives have been disrupted. A lawyer may negotiate on your behalf with the insurance company to reach a fair settlement.
