A 45-year-old man was taken into custody on July 18 after causing a traffic accident in Gainesville. Police say that the crash occurred after the man drove through a red light on NE 39th Avenue and North Main Street. The driver exhibited strong signs of impairment when he was apprehended by authorities.

Politician says Uber prevents drunk driving

On June 21, Florida House Majority Leader Dana Young used her Twitter account to voice support for Uber. Young stated that there have been significantly fewer DUI arrests in Tampa since the ridesharing company began operating there. She also said that the 'Austin situation" was 'disturbing." In May, Uber and Lyft stopped operating in Austin, and some people believe that there has been more drunk driving in the Texas city as a result.

Florida woman charged with DUI with toddler in car

According to law enforcement officials with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department, a 31-year-old woman from Ruskin was charged with DUI after driving the wrong way on 50th Street South on June 6. Reportedly, the woman had a toddler in the automobile at the time of the incident.

Couple detained after abandoning car stashed with narcotics

In Florida, Brevard County residents who find themselves facing criminal charges related to impaired driving while in possession of a controlled substance may be interested in a case that is unfolding on the opposite side of the state. According to media sources, two people have been taken into custody after authorities allegedly discovered narcotics inside their abandoned vehicle in Walton County on May 15.

More DUI problems for Justin Blackmon

Justin Blackmon, who has been suspended from the Jacksonville Jaguars since 2013, will be sentenced in June after pleading guilty to misdemeanor DUI charges from an incident in December. Florida football fans may now that it is the third time he has been charged in an alcohol-related incident.

Supreme Court hears arguments on warrantless DUI testing

On April 20, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments over the legality of state laws in Minnesota and North Dakota that make it a separate crime when drivers who have been suspected of DUI refuse a blood, urine or breath test when police do not have a search warrant. Eleven other states have similar laws, although Florida makes it a separate misdemeanor only on a second or subsequent offense.
