Traffic stop leads to felony drug charges for Florida woman

News sources in Florida report that a woman was charged with felony possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana following a traffic stop on March 16. According to sources, the woman was riding in the passenger seat of a car that a local law enforcement official pulled over in Fort Walton Beach after it almost caused a collision with another vehicle. When the officer approached the car, he detected what he described as a "strong odor" of marijuana emanating from its interior.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:45 p.m. The arrest report indicates that the officer was on patrol in the vicinity of Mary Esther Cutoff and Jonquil when he observed a southbound Pontiac make a late left turn in front of an oncoming northbound vehicle. After the alleged odor inside the car was noted, a search of a purse found on the white car's passenger-side front seat revealed 33 grams of marijuana.

The 21-year-old passenger told police that the purse belonged to her. Reports indicate that the woman was subsequently taken into police custody. On March 31, sources reported that the woman is scheduled to make her next appearance in court on April 21.

Additional information about this case is not available at press time, but if the charged woman's attorney is able to find evidence that police did not follow proper procedure when they searched the vehicle and its contents, the charges could possibly be dropped and the case dismissed. Because conviction on drug charges in Florida can have serious consequences, individuals who find themselves in a situation similar to this one may find it beneficial to seek help from a skilled criminal defense attorney at their earliest opportunity.
